What are Warning Signs of Frozen Pipes?

1/19/2024 (Permalink)

pipe bursting with water It's important to take immediate action if you suspect frozen pipes to prevent them from bursting and causing further damage.

Along with winter comes below freezing temperatures that can put your Boardman, Youngstown, Salem, and surrounding areas home and commercial properties in a bind. Freezing temperatures can cause frozen pipes as well as ice dams. Frozen pipes can be detrimental to your property. Once warmer weather comes along, your frozen pipes can burst from the pressure of the water inside, therefore causing water damage in your home in business.

Here are warning signs that you have frozen pipes:

  • Reduced water flow or lack of water altogether
  • Strange smells coming from faucets or drains
  • A noticeable drop in water pressure
  • Visible frost on exposed pipes
  • Banging or cracking noises when you run water
  • Certain appliances stop working

It's important to take immediate action if you suspect frozen pipes to prevent them from bursting and causing further damage. How to Prepare Your Youngstown Home Before Vacation

7/24/2023 (Permalink)

leaking water pipe We are considered a “large loss” SERVPRO, meaning we have the capacity to handle every job no matter how big or small it may be.

There is nothing worse than coming home from a relaxing vacation to water damage. Obviously when you are away, disasters can get out of control very quickly. That’s why SERVPRO of Mahoning and North Columbiana Counties is here to give you some going away tips before you leave for your retreat. Let’s get busy!

Walk Through the Entire House

Looking over your Boardman house, in its entirety, is the best way to check for problems before you leave. Check the pipes underneath the sink, ensure the sump pump is running, and check your water heater for any cracks or leaks.

Turn off the Water Supply

Usually, a leaky supply line happens while you are away. Turning the main line off while you are on vacation eliminates the chance of a pipe burst causing major structural damage to your Boardman home.

Check the Gutters

We know you just cleaned those out, right?! If not, make sure to do it before you leave. If there is heavy rainfall while you are away this will ensure the gutters are free of debris, leaves, and sticks and can prevent a water disaster from affecting your attic.

Replace Plastic Supply Lines

Swapping out plastic lines for stainless steel ones could be one of the best last-minute decisions of your life. This inexpensive switch can reduce the chance of leaks therefore highly eliminating the chance of pipe break while you are away.

Even if you think you have covered every precaution in the world…accidents can still happen. And when they do, SERVPRO of Mahoning and North Columbiana Counties is Here to Help. We are the area’s number one water restoration company. We are considered a “large loss” SERVPRO, meaning we have the capacity to handle every job no matter how big or small it may be.

Is My Shower Leaking in My Salem Home Really That Big of a Deal?

7/14/2023 (Permalink)

mold in bathroom Why would a small shower leak be such a hazard? Well, any obscured water leak can cause mold and mildew to start growing.

Let’s talk hypothetic scenarios. You master bathroom shower head has been dripping. Okay, leaking for who knows how long. You’ve seen it. Ignored it. Hoped it would stop. But it hasn’t.  You think about it after you shower. You think…“could that be a bigger problem than I think?” Eh. It’s a quick thought, and you go about your day.  SERVPRO of Mahoning and North Columbiana Counties is here to remind you about that shower head and to warn you that hidden water leaks are a hazard in any bathroom.

Why would a small shower leak be such a hazard? Well. For starters, any obscured water leak can cause mold and mildew to start growing. Drywall impacted by a water leak can begin to grow mold and mildew as soon as 24 hours after exposure. Not what you needed to hear, right? Drywall acts as a sponge to water and moisture. Even if the mold and mildew are not visible—you can bet your ‘shampoo’ that a leaky shower head is guaranteed to have some sort of buildup. If you attempt to fix the leak yourself; you will most likely have to replace some of the damaged drywall that was touched by mold. And if breathing in mold does not scare you…the fact that it’s most likely rotting away the wood in your studs, struts and other supporting beams in your bathroom should. This leaves the structure of your home susceptible to termites and roaches to further undermine the structure of the house. Not a good look.

Finding a hidden leak can be tricky. The goal is tracing it back to its source. It will take some investigation and problem solving since it isn’t always as obvious as you’d like it to be. Build.com gives some key points to looks for:

  •   The main signs to look for are dampness on walls, on the floor, or the ceiling, and a musty odor in the bathroom, even when not in use.
  •   Eliminate other causes and easy fixes first, and then, once you’re certain it’s behind the walls, do the work to pinpoint the cause and source of the shower leak.
  •   Keep in mind that repairing the piping may seem easy enough, but remedying mold, mildew and damaged structural components or drywall may take time and some research.
  •   If you aren’t willing to call in a pro, make use of pipe patching materials to stop the leak until you’re able to properly fix it and the damage it’s done.

Hidden water leaks are no easy task to tackle. If you feel this is something that’s over your head----call SERVPRO of Mahoning and North Columbiana Counties

We are water damage restoration specialists and are ready to restore your Salem home back to pre-water damage condition. We quickly extract the water and then dry your property using state-of-the-art equipment. During this spring season, many people experience water damage and leaky roofs from the excessive rainfall and often don’t know how to handle it. Let’s chat about it!

Water damage from a leaking roof can cause significant damage to a building's structure, as well as personal property. This type of damage can be caused by a variety of factors, including age, weather, and poor maintenance. To prevent water damage from a leaking roof, it's important to regularly inspect and maintain the roof. This includes looking for signs of damage, such as missing or cracked shingles, and repairing any issues promptly. It's also important to ensure that gutters and downspouts are clear of debris and functioning properly, as clogged gutters can cause water to back up and overflow onto the roof.

If you do experience water damage from a leaking roof, it's important to address the issue as soon as possible. This may involve repairing or replacing the damaged section of the roof, as well as repairing any damage to the interior of the building. In some cases, it may also be necessary to address any mold or mildew growth that has occurred as a result of the water damage. It's important to note that insurance policies may cover water damage from a leaking roof, so it's important to contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the damage and begin the claims process.

Ew, Sewage. Who Should I Call in New Springfield?

7/22/2021 (Permalink)

A toilet. We are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to safely restore your home or business.

Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment are necessary to safely clean this type of contamination. Allow SERVPRO of Mahoning and North Columbiana Counties to explain.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses.
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated.

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes.
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Monitor Your Water Bill

Connections are the most common area for leaks in your pipes. Check where pipes connect to toilets, sinks, washing machines, and more! These are the most at-risk areas. If you suspect you have a leak, these are some good places to check.

Physical Signs

If you see your walls or ceilings have some physical changes, you might have a leak! If there is a stain or discoloration, there could be water damage behind the surface. Other physical changes include bubbling, peeling, or warping of surfaces. All are signs of water damage and possible leaks.

Odor

Moisture, and water damage, has a distinct odor. Using your sense of smell can locate leaks in your home that are hidden. Do not ignore these smells! Use your best judgment when you smell moisture in your Youngstown home.

Tips to Make Sure Your Sump Pump is Ready for Spring at Your East Mahoning County Home

4/27/2021 (Permalink)

sump pump in cement basement floor Don't let spring showers flood your basement. Here are some helpful tips to be sure your sump pump is working properly!

We all know April showers bring May flowers. But April showers can also increase the amount of water coming into your basement from the winter runoff. Allow SERVPRO of East Mahoning County to give you some tips of how to maintain the sump pump this Spring to prevent unwanted plumbing.

Take the cover off.

Ensure to check the tank for any debris that can block it. Look for things like leaves, gravel, mud, or rocks.

Be sure to flush the system.

To be sure the pump is working properly, you can test it out by “flushing” it out with either a bucket of water or a hose. Be sure to listen to make sure it is not making any odd sounds. The sump pump should be running with ease. If you hear something array, contact your local plumber immediately.

Examine the float.

This is one of the largest reasons for overflow. When testing the sump pump, make sure the float travels easily on the float rod.

Check the discharge pipe.

Just like the tank… make sure the outside discharge pipe is not blocked by anything either. The pipe can become blocked with debris as well. You also want to check the direction of the water. Ensure it is traveling away from your foundation of your home.

Inspect the check valve.

Plumbers suggest at least a 3/16 relief hole between the pump and the check valve for good measure. Ensuring this is at the recommended 3/16 will maintain the life of the pump and prevent failure.

If your Youngstown home does experience water damage this spring… call the water damage experts at SERVPRO of East Mahoning County. Water damage is the cornerstone of our business, and we do it better than anyone else. Visit our website or our Facebook page for more tips of the trade.

Making a Water Damage Claim in New Middleton

7/9/2020 (Permalink)

Family sitting in a boat in their house with water damage Water damage can be overwhelming and stressful, let SERVPRO of East Mahoning County come help you out!

Water damage can cause a hurricane of feelings from loss to confusion and worry. The last thing most people want to do is get on the phone and fight with their insurance company to make a claim.

SERVPRO of East Mahoning County is here to help walk you though the process and keep you informed. Here are 3 basics to keep in mind and help get you through the process.

  1. Understand What Is Covered: Unfortunately, after water damage has occurred, it is not possible to change your insurance plan. Choosing an insurance policy that will cover common types of damage is helpful. By knowing what your insurance policy will cover, you can be more prepared for a disaster, and you can quickly make a claim and spend less time worrying about the financial aspect of the damage.
  2. Documentation Is Key: After you have made the insurance claim, your insurance company will likely request documentation to know how to compensate you. Many insurance companies send an adjuster to photograph the damage. In most cases the more documentation you can provide to the insurance adjuster and your insurance policy, the better.
  3. Time Matters: After a claim has been made, the next priority is to fix and clean your home. However, spending time attempting to fix a broken pipe or trying to clean your home on your own can be both time-consuming and hazardous. When it comes to standing water, time is of the essence because it can lead to structural damage if left untouched for too long. Making the most of the time you have and calling in professionals is often the best way to ensure your home does not become more damaged.

Homeowners with damaged homes might find it helpful to contact water damage restoration experts. The professionals at SERVPRO of East Mahoning County are available 24/7 and highly trained in water restoration. We will work with you and your insurance company to get your life back to normal as soon as possible.

Is Your Basement Best Friends with Water and Humidity?

7/7/2020 (Permalink)

Water seeping in through cracks in basement flooring This water damage was caused by cracks where the wall meets the floor.

Picture the basement in your home…

Is it humid in the summer months?

Are there small puddles or damp spots after a rainfall?

Do the walls ever have visible condensation?

Is there a damp, musty smell that makes it unpleasant to spend time in your basement?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, it may indicate that your basement has a moisture problem.

Although the problem may seem small and inconsequential now, moisture can leave long term damage if it is not mitigated effectively. Mold loves to grow in dark, damp spaces and can cause health concerns if it is in fact growing in your basement.

There is a chance I just delivered some unfortunate news to you, so I am going to present some solutions to you next!

First, it is a great idea to invest in a dehumidifier to dry out the air in your basement. Especially if you smell the musty, unpleasant odor, the dehumidifier will help eliminate this problem.

Inspect the floors and walls of your basement. Are there cracks where the wall meets the floor? This could be where the water is seeping in.

If you are continually seeing water and damp spots in your basement, it is probably a good idea to call SERVPRO of East Mahoning County.

When our team arrives, we will perform an inspection to determine the cause of the water and the best way to mitigate the problem. Our professionals will employ the use of powerful dehumidifiers and air movers to eliminate the moisture as quickly as possible.

Where's the Leak in Mahoning County Homes?

4/30/2020 (Permalink)

image of window well containing sitting water that can cause water damage to a basement Ground water and heavy rain water can accumulate in the window seals and can cause leaks.

During the rainy spring months, you may see water in your basement. Whether your basement is fully finished or not, it can be pesky to clean up and difficult to find the source. Here’s a few possible places the water leak can be coming from:

A Wall Leak: In some older homes, water can gather in low spots in the ground and could eventually leak into your home through the bottom of the main floor. Water can also leak through the cracks in the middle of your walls. This is a more damaging type of leak because it means there is a build up of pressure in the ground and water then pushes against the wall overtime.

Mortar Joints: If your basement walls are made of cinder blocks or brick instead of concrete, these blocks or bricks can deteriorate overtime and break down leading to water leaks.

Drain Tiles: On the contrary, just because your home is newer doesn’t mean you are less susceptible to water damage in your basement. Drain tiles often wrap around the edge of your newer basement. It looks like a plastic pipe wrapped in a cloth sock surrounded by gravel. It is usually safe and durable but can be affected by a storm, tree roots or any outside elements.

Window Well: Newer basements are often built with windows to allow more natural light to come in. However, ground water and heavy rain water can accumulate in the window seals and can cause leaks. Sometimes this leak is in direct correlation to an overflowing gutter that leads into the window cracks.

Additionally, be on the lookout for leaks in more common spots like the sewer pipes or basement sump pump. Sewer pipe leaks will often be visible and show stains. Sump pumps often experience failure, clogging or can simply be installed incorrectly.

When you spot any water damage or are having trouble locating the source of the leak, call us at SERVPRO® of East Mahoning County at (330) 536-7477 and we can help immediately. We can help you stay dry and safe!

Gutter Cleaning in Youngstown, OH

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

House gutter packed with leaves Clogged gutters are certainly an annoyance, but it left unattended, they can become harmful to the home’s foundation.

Fall is finally upon us! The air is crisp, the leaves begin to change, football season is in full swing and the kids are back in school!

With the beautiful fall foliage comes falling leaves and as a result, piles of leaves all over the ground. Not only do leaves cover our lawns and driveways, but they also accumulate and clog gutters. Clogged gutters are certainly an annoyance, but it left unattended, they can become harmful to the home’s foundation.

Gutters are designed to prevent water damage to the interior or exterior of your home. When it rains, the gutters help remove the water from your rooftop by funneling it to a drain system. If clogged, the system fails and backups, creating a strong chance the water will leak into your home.

Have you ever cleaned your gutters before? Here are some helpful tips to make the process much easier for you!

  • Wear long sleeves and gloves. You never know how wet and dirty the leaves actually are up there!
  • Use a sturdy ladder. You would be surprised how many people are hurt from falling from ladders while cleaning their gutters! It might be smart to find a ladder with a standoff stabilizer (also called ladder horns). Certain ladders can damage and bend gutters. Using ladder horns lowers the risk for damage.
  • Scoop it up! Don't feel like using your hands? Pick up a child's sandbox shovel from the dollar store and start scooping!
  • Make clean-up easier by using a plastic tarp. Raking and throwing away leaves is already a time-consuming task, so don’t make your life harder by dumping all the gutter debris on the ground.  Take the leaves and debris from your gutter and throw it on a plastic tarp. When you're done gather it up and throw it in a large trash bag.
  • Rinse, Rinse, Rinse! You might think you're done after you remove the leaves from your gutter but you actually aren't! Take a garden hose and rinse out the gutters and downspouts to get rid of any excess dirt and debris. This is also a good time to make sure you don’t have any leaks.

If you don’t want to take the time to clean your gutters yourself, or maybe you just don’t feel too secure on a ladder, don’t risk your life! Call SERVPRO of East Mahoning County and we will clean out your gutters and clean up the mess! Call us today! (330) 536-7477

Classifications of Water and What it Means

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

Drain pipe that has sprung a leak It doesn’t matter what type of water has caused damage to your home or business, SERVPRO is here to help and make it "Like it never even happened.

Water damage would be much simpler if we could think of all water causing damage as the same. But unfortunately, there are three different classifications of water: clean, gray and black. Understanding the differences in these types of water will help you understand how to better handle the situation.

What Is Clean Water?

Much like its name states, “clean” water is not the type to pose an immediate threat to your health as this water is free of contaminants. This type of water is usually found in:

Broken water lines

Malfunctioning appliances

Toilet holding tanks

Snow melt and rainwater

This is the easiest type of water damage to clean up, as there will not be as many microbes living in the water. Clean water is considered ‘Level 1’ when classifying types of water. Keep in mind, if the water is sitting for 48 hours or more and meets the surfaces of a building, it can move up to a level 2.

What Is Gray Water?

With “gray” water, damage cleanup and restoration become more serious and involved. It may pose a health risk because it usually contains chemical or biological contamination.

Gray water can often come from dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. Again, the 48-hour exposure time applies here as well, because if it is not quickly treated, gray water will turn into black water.

What Is Black Water?

Black water is the third classification of damaging water and the most serious of the three classifications. It is highly contaminated by harmful chemicals and biological matter, such as floodwaters containing soil and all sewage waters.

Sewage is full of contaminating microbes, including bacteria, protozoans, molds, fungi and more, which can be harmful to humans. Some of the diseases that can be transmitted by black water are:

Cholera

Typhoid

Hepatitis

Gastroenteritis-type illnesses

Remember, when it comes to floods, assume that all water is black water since it will pick up contaminants as it travels along its path.

All three of these classifications are recognized by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Remediation Certification (IICRC), which is an organization that certifies and sets the standard for the cleaning and restoration industry.

SERVPRO of East Mahoning County technicians are all IICRC certified and trained in the best practices for water restoration.

It doesn’t matter what type of water has caused damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of East Mahoning County is here to help get and make it "Like it never even happened." Don’t hesitate to call if you need emergency cleanup and restoration services!  (330) 536-7477.

Top 4 Causes of Commercial Water Damage in Campbell, Ohio

7/10/2019 (Permalink)

Extensive water damage can happen very quickly. Leaks and cracks can turn into a downpour and flood an entire area or property.

Extensive water damage can happen very quickly. It only takes one broken pipe or a small roof leak to turn into a downpour that can flood an entire area or property.

If your commercial building is not in immaculate condition, you are at risk for water damage. By becoming familiar with the top 4 causes of water damage, you can be better prepared in case of an emergency and minimize lost revenue as a result of downtime.

Broken or Leaky Pipes and Drains: Your plumbing system is always at-risk for developing clogs, stoppages, and leaks. If a crack develops, it can spill 250 gallons of dirty water in your facility. This is especially dangerous in restrooms, where sewer water can be filled with hazardous waste.

Look for any outward signs of moisture, rusting, or cracking pipes. Additionally, always keep pipes insulated  if they are exposed to lower temperatures to prevent freezing.

Active leak detection systems can be valuable as they can detect and stop leaks from happening.

Sprinkler Systems: Commercial buildings are required by law to be equipped with sprinkler systems. The system works in conjunction with the fire alarm to turn on anytime the fire alarm is activated. This makes them very valuable in preventing fire damage, but simultaneously causes water damage in the process.

In addition, sprinkler systems can malfunction and cause water damage all on their own. Always check your sprinkler system for signs of damage or rust.

Appliances and Equipment: If your facility contains equipment or appliances that utilize water, such as air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators or water heaters, leaks or breaks are a constant concern.

The best action you can take is to regularly inspect and maintain your equipment. Take preventative measures: replace water lines, re-caulk, and re-seal.

Roofs: Leaky roofs are the most common cause of water damage, especially in geographies that frequently experience hail or freezing temperatures. We all know this is a common occurrence in East Mahoning County.

If there is a large volume of water accumulating on your roof, you should probably have that inspected by a professional. One inch of water weighs almost five pounds and over time, this can cause strain and damage to your building.

You can rely on SERVPRO of East Mahoning County if you experience any kind of water damage in your home or business.

Frozen Pipes

2/9/2017 (Permalink)

Use a blow dryer to warm pipes

During winter in your Poland area pipes often freeze during winter months. When temperatures get down around 20 degrees and sometimes above if the pipes are exposed to cold windy air usually due to cracks in walls pipes will freeze. When water in the pipes freeze it expands into ice putting pressure on the pipe and can cause it to burst leading to a broken pipe and a flood in your home. Pipes that are metal or water lines to things like pools, sprinklers, and interior pipes can burst no matter what the water is flowing through if it’s frozen. To prevent pipes from freezing it’s important to keep garage doors closed if water supply is in garage, open cabinets and doors, let water drip in facets, and keep it warm in the area where pipes are. If frozen pipes occur, keep the faucet open while warming the pipe; apply heat to the section of pipe, but avoid using open flame devices. To avoid this problem keep pipes warm. In the event that your pipes burst and flooding occurs, call the professionals to extract the water and make it like it never even happened at (330)536-7477. Ice Dams

1/3/2017 (Permalink)

How Do Ice Dams Form?

Usually after a snow storm there is a pile of snow sitting on the roof above your attic. After the weather warms above 32 degrees Fahrenheit to melt the under layer of the snow it causes the top layer to form into a mound of ice.

Damages They Cause:

After the ice dam reaches it full capacity, the melted water begins to seep underneath the shingles along with dripping into the insulation and down to the ceilings.

How to Remove the Ice Dams?

Removing ice dams can easily lead to damages even if extremely careful. To efficiently remove the ice dams call a professional to prevent damages to your shingles.

Prevention:

To keep your Youngstown home safe try one of these tips-

A simple prevention method is simply scraping the snow off of the roof the day it falls.

Another way to prevent ice dams is by installing heated cables before the winter begins.

It is obvious that water and electricity are a dangerous combination. There are many ways to prevent many dangers that may occur from water and electricity. Keeping your appliances away from water except for washing machines and dishwashers can prevent fires from starting. One little drip onto a power cord can cause a home fire. Another simple suggestion is to refrain from touching electricity with wet hands to prevent electrocution. To inhibit electrical accidents, refrain from putting portable heaters in a bathroom. As tempting as it might be to carry your portable heater with you on a winter morning, this practice could cause a severe incident if any water were to spill. It is detrimental for your safety and well being to unplug all appliances from the outlet after finished to prevent any fires.
