When it rains, it pours. According to statistics published by the American Society of Home Inspectors, roughly 60% of the houses in the United States have moisture problems. With the spring season being just around the corner, homeowners should be prepared for heavy rainfall and take preventative measures against possible basement water issues.
So, what can you do? Here is a list of several things that can minimize the risk of having a wet basement:
- Ensure your gutters clear of leaves and other debris
- Check your downspouts (it’s recommended to extend them at least 10 feet from your home)
- Landscape slope – the land around your home should be sloping away from it
- Seal your basement
- Check for signs of foundation damage
- Install a sump pump (also consider buying a backup battery-powered pump in case the power goes out)
Should you experience a water damage situation in your home, immediate action is critical as mold can quickly and easily spread. A fast response lessens the damage, limits further damage, and reduces cost.
