Sleep with Your Door Closed at Your East Mahoning County Home

Did you know that most fires happen, at your home, between the hours of 11 PM and 7 AM when most people are sleeping? Allow SERVPRO of East Mahoning County give you a small, yet lifesaving, fire tip for those bedtime hours.
Research from UL’s Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FRSI) “shows that closing your bedroom door helps prevent a fire from spreading, lessens smoke damage and could even save lives.”
The reason closing your door is so effective is because it stops some of the spread of fire due to the decrease of oxygen. It also reduces smoke level toxins. Stopping the toxins is almost even more beneficial because deaths occur more often than not due to smoke inhalation.
When the bedroom door is shut the temperature will typically stay below 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the oxygen stays at a liveable percentage, and less toxic carbon monoxide levels reach the inside of the room.
All of these factors are the exact opposite when the bedroom door is open. Flames will reach the inside of the room more quickly since there is no barrier, the temperature can go as high as 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the oxygen level percentage goes to a non-breathable level, and dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can reach the inside of the room.
Back in the 80’s, the suggested time to get out of the home was recommended at 15-20 minutes. Today, the recommended time is limited to no more than 3 or 4 minutes. Now that is a major difference! Want to know the reason newer homes burn faster? Read our blog titled “The Dangers of New Construction Homes in Canfield”. Three to four minutes does not sound like a lot of time, especially if you are ill-prepared. Fully protect yourself and your family by creating a fire safety plan, checking your smoke detectors often, and have a plan to close your doors at night.
