Fire Drills: Not Just For Schools
8/31/2020 (Permalink)
Most everyone remembers fire drills in elementary school. The teacher prepares the class, line up single file and walk quietly and quickly outside.
But think about the last time you had a fire drill in the workplace?
Fire drills are an important part of working in a commercial building as they keep people safe in case of an emergency. It is important to be prepared to help prevent any injuries or fatalities.
Below are some fire drill tips for the workplace:
- Prepare an evacuation plan
It is important to have a plan in place before you need one. It is important to be as detailed as possible to limit confusion. Outline the exit routes and make a clear outline of actions employees will need to take to get to the escape destination. Make sure to include phone numbers for commercial building restorations as well.
- Train and Communicate with your Employees
Once you have completed the plan, it is important to effectively communicate and introduce it to your staff. Emphasize the importance of the fire drill and make sure everyone follows the plan. Prepare your employees in advance, then have them practice.
- Practice
By running the drills, everyone involved will feel safer in case of an actual fire. It will help to set some goals with your staff that you hope to achieve by running the drills. The goal should identify and measure how well the plan works. Make sure to assess the success and adapt your goals for next time to improve performance.
- Follow-Up
Once running a drill, be sure to follow-up on any corrections. Revisit the plan as needed and make adjustments.
