After the flames and smoke clear, most people are left wondering, “What do I do now?” To help you overcome the despair and confusion of a fire, SERVPRO is here to answer some of your most common questions!
- Can I live in my home immediately after a fire?
If the damage to your home was not extensive, you should be able to live in your home. Smoke, soot, and water damage can all make a home uninhabitable.
You should always let the fire department survey the damage before re-entering your home. If your utilities are turned off by the fire department, do not attempt to turn them back on yourself.
If you do need temporary housing, friends and family may be able to provide that or The Salvation Army or The Red Cross Organization should be able to help you.
- Should I throw away all my food after a fire?
You should plan to throw away all the food remaining in your kitchen.
The fire department most likely turned off your electricity, so the food in your fridge and freezer is probably spoiled.
Be sure to inspect and thoroughly clean all your cutlery and cookware as smoke and firefighting chemicals can cause serious illness if ingested. Always error on the side of caution.
- Can I save my furniture?
Furniture is an investment and it will probably be one of your first concerns after the fire is extinguished.
Even after fire, smoke, and water have damaged your furniture, it can most likely be salvaged.
