How to Prepare Your Pets for a Storm in East Mahoning County
4/14/2020 (Permalink)
The spring and summer months ahead in Ohio and other parts of the midwest often bring bad storm weather. In preparation for a potential dangerous storm, it is important to think about protecting your pets and having an evacuation plan for them, in case you have to leave your home in a hurry.
The American Red Cross recommends having a ready-to-go emergency kit and storing it in a study container that is easily accessible. Do not place this kit high up or tucked away in an attic where you cannot grab it and go. Here’s what to include in your pet kit:
- Sturdy leashes
- A harness or carrier
- Pet food (Do not forget a manual can opener if you have a cat.)
- First aid kit
- Any pet medications
- Medical records in a waterproof container
- Garbage bags
- Pet toys
- Bottled water and a bowl
- Feeding schedules
- Contact information for the owner and the veterinarian in case you are separated from your pet.
Other things to think about ahead of any dangerous spring or summer storms are to make sure your pet has a collar with correct ID info. Be sure your pet has up to date vaccinations and consider getting your met micro-chipped.
